Double vision (also known as diplopia), makes a person see two images of a single object instead of one. It can be horizontal, vertical, or tilted. Causes range from dry eyes and muscle weakness to nerve issues or brain conditions.
Our doctors at the Westbrook Vision Center, use advanced testing and customized treatment to restore your vision and find the reason for your double vision.
What a Person Experiences from diplopia:
  • Double Images: Seeing two distinct pictures side-by-side, vertically stacked, or diagonal.
  • Eye Strain: Feeling tired or aching around the eyes from trying to keep the images single.
  • Headaches: Developing headaches/migraines from the eye muscles and brain working too hard to line up the eyes.
  • Dizziness: Diplopia can cause a feeling of being unsteady or off-balance due to confused visual cues.
  • Squinting: Closing one eye to make the double vision go away
  • Tilting Your Head: double vision goes away by tilting head in some instances.
Common Reasons for Diplopia:
  • Corneal (font of the eye) Issues: Dry eyes, scars, or irregular shaped cornea due to disease or other corneal conditions.
  • Crystalline Lens Problems: Cataracts or clouding inside the eye.
  • Eye Muscle Weakness: Trouble with the muscles that move the eye, often called strabismus.
  • Nerve Damage: Conditions like cranial nerve palsies that stop the eye muscles from working right.
  • Brain or Systemic Factors: Stroke, head trauma, diabetes, hypertension or autoimmune disorders.
